Happy International Women’s Day!

In honor of International Women’s Day, we want to pay tribute to the women who are organizing to fight public sexual harassment across the globe.  Check out these amazing women and groups that are working to make their streets safe for all girls and women.

Respekte Nu, a campign in Mauritius, which launched in direct response to Alyssa Fine’s research and report on street harassment in Mauritius.

The Egyptian Centre for Women’s Rights (ECWR) focuses their activism on public sexual harassment.  Because of the ECW’s work the  Egyptian Parliament is considering legislation that would ban sexual harassment at work, in public spaces, online, and through mobile devices. The Blank Noise Project was started by art student Jasmeen Patheja in August 2003.  Founded in Bangalore, it has now spread to Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Calcutta, and Chandigarh. Blank Noise works to dispel attitudes that women “ask for it” and that sexual harassment often occurs because of the clothing a woman wears.  Blank Noise often uses art and demonstrations to educate and raise awareness about street harassment.

HollabackUK, started in October 2009 to collect street harassment experiences from individuals in the UK.

These groups and women inspire us and we are proud to be a part of the international movement to end public sexual harassment!
