How do you counter that?

I was biking down Mount Pleasant street on my way to work around 8:45 in the morning. As I approach the 7-11, there is a middle-aged man looking up the street at me. Right as I pass by, I get this gem of a line shouted at me, in a pretty aggressive tone:

“I’m going to bend you over the kitchen table and f-ck you, bitch.”

I was too disturbed to do anything but turn around and glare. How do you counter that?

  1. Disgusting. What a pig. God what is wrong with these species called men?! No respect, no morals. Just pure filth and agression. Shame on him!

  2. if you have a vicious, vulgar mind, there’s lots of ways! but who has the time or inclination? well, i do sometimes… something about a garbage disposal and his junk, perhaps…

i digress! the point of such an act is not to engage in a dialogue but to assert himself on you. and you could have responded, and would have been within your rights to do so. not responding is also a good response.

there’s no one right way to deal with this shit, except to do what feels right and safe at the moment. it’s just like they teach you in self-defense, you win as long as you walk away alive. dire but true.

  3. As long as the person is not physically touching you there is no harm done. You choose whether to take offense or not.

    • Thanks, Greg, but you must be a new reader to this site. Your point is exactly what we are trying to debunk. We don’t want to wait till it’s physical to call it harm (and under the law, we are correct is assuming that verbal harassment is a crime). Keep reading and maybe you’ll change your mind.

  4. Greg,
I can see how if there’s no physical mark made, then no foul. But, how can this be viewed as a positive or even neutral remark? It’s pretty hard not to take this one personally, and wonder what happened to provoke that.
