Harassed on the Elevator

It was Friday and 5:00 couldn’t come soon enough. Work got too overwhelming so I decided to step away from my desk for a little bit and go for a walk to collect myself. I get in the elevator, eager to get outside, and it stops to pick up a man on a lower floor. Just a few seconds after he gets in the elevator, I notice he’s staring at me so I try to keep my cool and look up the numbers in hopes that, somehow, the elevator would feel my pain and hurry up. He then says to me “You have really beautiful eyes.” I quietly say ‘thank you’ and he replies “I mean, you’re young enough to be my daughter but you really have beautiful eyes.” The door opened and I rushed out of the elevator even more upset than I was when I got in it. The whole walk I wondered and wished that I had said “What the F*&K does my age have anything to do with my eyes?!” The more I thought about it, the more I was creeped out. I just wanted to go for a walk.

  1. So being told you have beautiful eyes is harassment? Granted often (not always) there’s a fine line…..but is that *really* harassment, or is it just that the guy was not smooth and/or the lady wasn’t feeling him?

If I see one more comment downplaying and negating a woman’s harassment experience, I’ll scream.
