Cuban Tabasco

Some guy yelled “Cuban Tabasco wants you to sit on his salami.” I didn’t know what to do, so I just rolled my eyes and walked away. Nasty!

“You look good in that, but you’d look better out of it”

I just got out of an MMA class, and this dude on 14th and Irving compliments my outfit, and says “You look good in that, but you’d look better out of it” or some stupid thing like that. He muttered it enough that I just ignored him and went to the wine store. When I got out of the store, he’s right outside and says “That’s a mighty big bag. Do you need help with that bag? What do you have in there.”

Rolling my eyes, I say “boxing gloves, mouthguards, focus mitts, thai pads, shin guards, handwraps, and a stinky shirt with some blood on it.” I was honest about everything but the blood, I just wanted an exclamation mark. Biohazard usually works in that regard, I think.

He said “oh, sounds like you can handle it yourself, sorry, ma’am.”

“I’ve seen this harassment dozens of times!”

I’ve seen the following type of street harassment happen dozens of times in Adams Morgan. A few weeks ago, it finally happened to me.

The scene: Adams Morgan late night, from 10pm onward.

The players: Groups of four or more men loitering, sitting on their cars, and otherwise “hanging out” in the street. Typical activities include picking fights with men and sexually harassing women.

Also starring: Women walking on 18th Street.

The plot: The group separates a woman from her companions while one man grabs her elbow from behind. Dialogue includes, “Hey, hey, hey”, “Come here,” and “Where you going?”

In my case, I saw this stunt pulled on a woman walking ahead of me. Rejected, I was the next target. A prime candidate, because I was already walking alone.

My reaction: A big, loud, “F#$% you! Get off me!”

I’m still angry about this. The very presumption to grab a person, like they owed you something, makes my skin crawl and grates me. And, although there is an exceptional police presence in Adams Morgan on nights like this, there’s nothing the cops would or could do about this situation.

In fact, I recently saw a group of Guardian Angels in Adams Morgan in the evening. Too bad they didn’t budge from the police van outside Heaven and Hell and made a point to not engage with the people walking past in the street. Even when things got heated and it would have been useful to have someone hold people accountable.

Waiting for the Bus

I was walking to the bus stop and these guys in a car (I think a red Ford Windstar, but did not get the license number) pulled down their window and started yelling gross things. This happened three times in a thirty minute span. I stayed on the phone with a bus operator and then a friend until my bus arrived.

“It felt like he was just trying to scare me on purpose!”

Image by Kent Wang via Flickr

I was carrying two heavy bags to my car about an hour after sunset when a man walked out from between two large trucks. He started towards me saying, “hey sweetheart, how are you doing, hey honey.” I kept walking with my head up, but my heart was pounding since he continued towards me. I opened the trunk of my car and he veered away about two feet from me and walked towards the store. It felt like he was just trying to scare me on purpose.

A Male Perspective

I was jogging in rock creek wearing a t-shirt and shorts and a car with at least two women honked and at the same time the women yelled “woohoo” and kept driving. No guy should have to experience this, it’s unwelcome and disrespectful. Women in DC should know better.

“It’s ugly out there!”

I walked off the Shaw/Howard Metro stop, minding my own business, and two guys started to follow me. They were just hitting on me, pretty par for course in my neighborhood, so I put my Ipod in and let it go. A block and a half later, I turn around and they’re still there. Now (since I’ve been ignoring them) they’ve taken to calling me a bitch and screaming that my ass is too flat. I’ve never stood up to catcalling before, but this was aggressive, so I sort of cracked and started screaming at them to fuck off. They eventually left me alone, but not before trying (again) to get my number or some shit.

I got home and was completely shaky–which I thought was overreacting on my part, because I’m pretty used to general harassment that comes my way. When I talked to my roommate about it, she pointed out that it was literal sexual harassment and I should have taken their pic and sent it to the police. Good point. It’s ugly out there!
