Too Many Occurrences

I was walking home from work at 16th and 1 block below P Street, NW, when two guys approached me and told me I have a fat ass. I said no thank you and kept walking, at which point they started following me. Fortunately, a bus pulled up and I was able to cross the street and catch it in time. It was very unnerving.

I also had an experience a couple weeks ago in front of the Target in Columbia Heights were a man asking for donations for Planned Parenthood, of all places, approached me to ask for money and then kept on about how he had watched me walk up the street and when I came out of Target wanted to talk to me. Ew.

“I felt entirely powerless in the situation.”

I was out with a guy I was casually dating, going to the liquor store to bring some drinks back to a party after dark. A group of four guys outside the store were complimenting my friend on his choice of a girl. They were saying that he’d better marry me, because I was so beautiful.

My friend normally talks to people on the street with ease; they were all chummy, but I felt entirely powerless in the situation, unable to express my discomfort at being talked about in this way. I felt like if I’d encountered these men alone, they would be catcalling me about these same things. The “buffer” of a (sort of) boyfriend was no real buffer at all, especially since he felt complimented by their remarks. I, on the other hand, felt a little bit sick, especially when they took freedom to suggest how we spend our night.

Cuban Tabasco

Some guy yelled “Cuban Tabasco wants you to sit on his salami.” I didn’t know what to do, so I just rolled my eyes and walked away. Nasty!

“You look good in that, but you’d look better out of it”

I just got out of an MMA class, and this dude on 14th and Irving compliments my outfit, and says “You look good in that, but you’d look better out of it” or some stupid thing like that. He muttered it enough that I just ignored him and went to the wine store. When I got out of the store, he’s right outside and says “That’s a mighty big bag. Do you need help with that bag? What do you have in there.”

Rolling my eyes, I say “boxing gloves, mouthguards, focus mitts, thai pads, shin guards, handwraps, and a stinky shirt with some blood on it.” I was honest about everything but the blood, I just wanted an exclamation mark. Biohazard usually works in that regard, I think.

He said “oh, sounds like you can handle it yourself, sorry, ma’am.”

We all seem to be attacked regardless of how we dress ourselves.

Once a week, I work at a basement boutique on U street. We don’t have an official store sign, so my bosses created a banner that we put up and take down as we need to. Last week after we had closed the store, I was standing over our stairs trying to figure out how to unclasp the banner. I was in a skirt and tights, as I am someone who generally likes to dress up.* All of a sudden, I hear a voice behind me say, “Damn mama! Look at that! You better be careful when you’re doing stuff like that, I can see everything!” He proceeds to keep talking, something about how great the view is or whatever. I honestly don’t remember the details because I was fuming. I managed to pitifully yell, “Leave me alone!” but he had already passed and was no longer paying attention.

I am harassed on a regular basis, and it is never welcome or received positively. But this time, just I felt so embarrassed and ashamed. If my underwear was showing, or he could see something, who cares? Why did he have to shout it out to the entire block (and he WAS shouting)? Seriously, did he think he was doing me a favor? That I deserved to be humiliated? I’ll never know.

*I put down what I wore to give a better context, but it’s interesting how so many of us on this website always mention what we were wearing, even though it doesn’t matter! Yoga pants, t-shirt, jeans, dresses etc. we all seem to be attacked regardless of how we dress ourselves.

“I’m not on display for you!”

I was riding my bike down 14th street wearing a jumper esque dress (not that what I was wearing really mattered/made it okay) and a man shouted “I can see your pussy!” I stopped my bike and walked over to the corner where the shouting occurred and confronted two men, but they said that it wasn’t them and that they don’t do that. Who knows if they were telling the truth. Totally disgusting. I can ride my bike in whatever clothing I want to, I’m not on display for you, thank you very much!

“Hey lady, I have a question…”

I was walking home around 4:45 p.m. I’m never home at this time so I’m not sure if my experience was typical or not. I walked past a group of young guys hanging out outside the liquor store at the corner of 14th and Florida NW. I wasn’t going to pay attention to them until one shouted at me and began to approach me. I turned my head and he said “Hey lady I have a question… Can I stick my tongue up your asshole?”
I know the kid was just trying to get attention and a laugh because he was with his friends, but it was really creepy for me. I don’t trust young boys in a group. I quickly walked away and made it home pretty fast. Just an overall creepy experience.

So ladies be careful near the corner of 14th and Florida.
